Symposium on Combating Violence Against Women

Symposium: “How to Confront Violence Against Women”


On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women,
on Monday (1-12-2025) from 11:00 to 12:30 AM, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Kamran Younis, President of Salahaddin University,
the Enlightenment Committee of the College of Arts organized a symposium in the (Farhadi) Hall.

The symposium was attended by:

  • Naz Falaqadin Kakayi – General Director of Erbil Public Library
  • Prof. Mohammed Joudat Omar – Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy
  • Dr. Chnar Namq – Lecturer in the Department of Media and Head of the Enlightenment Committee
  • Mr. Avan Jaf – Lecturer in the Department of Media
  • Parjin Jaafar Rostam – Lecturer in the Department of History
  • Mr. Mohammed Tayeb – Lecturer in the Department of Geography

The symposium was held under the title:
“How to Confront Violence Against Women.”

Opening

The symposium began with one minute of silence in honor of the martyrs, followed by the national anthem Ey Reqib.
Then Prof. Dr. Musa Mohammed Khidr, Dean of the College, delivered a speech about the role of women.

  • Naz Falaqadin Kakayi spoke about the influence of feminist writers in confronting violence, emphasizing that writing is not only documentation but also a tool for awareness, understanding, and change.
  • Dr. Chnar Namq discussed the importance of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and highlighted the role of new media in protecting women from digital violence and daily challenges in online spaces.
  • Prof. Mohammed Joudat Omar focused on the concept of Logos (the word), stressing that words can build or destroy, and therefore must be used positively as tools for tolerance and peaceful coexistence. He emphasized:
    1. Using positive language (focusing on what can be done rather than what cannot).
    2. Avoiding stereotyping and labeling people.
    3. Expressing feelings with “I feel” instead of blaming others.
  • Mr. Avan Jaf spoke about digital media strategies to resist violence against women.
  • Parjin Jaafar Rostam discussed Iraqi government policies toward women’s struggle in Southern Kurdistan between 1958–1991.
