The Sociology Department at Salahaddin University-Erbil is a vibrant academic unit dedicated to the study of society, culture, and human behavior. Through a combination of theoretical exploration and practical application, the department equips students with the tools to critically analyze social structures and contribute to meaningful change in their communities. Our programs span undergraduate to doctoral levels, offering a comprehensive curriculum that includes social theory, research methodology, social work, criminology, and media studies. Faculty members are actively engaged in research addressing key issues such as migration, gender dynamics, urbanization, and cultural transformation in the Kurdistan Region and beyond. The department fosters collaboration with local institutions, NGOs, and international partners, promoting interdisciplinary research and community engagement. Dr. Suha Younis Assistant Professor  
Biography
Dr. Suha Younis completed her Bachelor's degree in Sociology at the College of Arts, Salahaddin University, in 1997. She earned her Master's degree in Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance from Al-Mustansiriya University in 2006. Later, she obtained her Ph.D. in Social Work from the Sociology Department, College of Arts, Salahaddin University, in 2019. She has held the title of Assistant Professor since 2024.

Mission

The mission of the Department of Sociology at Salahaddin University-Erbil is to equip students with deep sociological knowledge, research skills, and ethical awareness to analyze social structures, institutions, and transformations. The department is committed to preparing graduates capable of contributing to community development, public policy, education, and social research, while promoting values of tolerance, inclusivity, and civic responsibility.

The Department of Sociology aspires to be a leading center for sociological education and research in the Kurdistan Region and beyond. Academic Exchange with University of Oslo

Ongoing since 2023

Faculty and graduate students participate in seminars and collaborative research on migration, gender studies, and comparative sociology. Includes virtual lectures and annual exchange visits.
Community Development Projects with NGOs

Launched: January 2025

Partnerships with local NGOs such as Harikar and REACH support student-led initiatives in youth empowerment, women’s rights, and rural education. Students gain field experience and contribute to impact reports.
Policy Research with Kurdistan Regional Government

Started: June 2022

Collaborative studies on social welfare, labor markets, and public health. Sociology faculty provide expertise for policy briefs and students assist in data collection and analysis.

Our Goals
We aim to equip students with the analytical tools needed to understand complex social structures, address societal challenges, and contribute meaningfully to their communities. Our curriculum emphasizes both theoretical foundations and practical applications of sociology.
Research & Community Engagement
Faculty and students actively engage in research that explores issues such as social inequality, gender studies, migration, urbanization, and cultural transformation. We collaborate with local and international organizations to promote social development and policy innovation.
 

Degree Program Overview

The Department of Sociology currently has two curricula, the first of which is the Bologna Process, which consists of a number of contemporary and new subjects. At the same time, the traditional system, which is a two-semester system. Both systems currently have programs aimed at preparing researchers for different spheres of society. Since 1982, he has graduated 39 batches of bachelor's degrees.

Postgraduate Studies

Up to now, the only postgraduate diploma granted in the Department of Sociology was in the 2023-2024 academic year.

Program learning outcome

Admissions

Admission to the Department of Sociology changes annually, based on the policy of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Currently, admission is based on the annual score of 60%, which means that students must obtain that score in the secondary school examination. After admission to the Department of Sociology, they will be eligible to register and start studying in the department. Meanwhile, admission at the master’s and doctoral levels is based on undergraduate marks and examination, with the examination being conducted on 30 marks.:

 

Graduate Employability

The Department of Sociology admitted undergraduate students for the first time in 1982. Since that time, nine Ph.D. programs have been completed, along with 13 master's programs. Since 1982, he has graduated 39 batches of bachelor's degrees.

The Sociology Department maintains strong and effective partnerships at the regional level. Simultaneously, it has established excellent scientific relationships with universities and institutes throughout Iraq in general, and the Kurdistan Region in particular. Additionally, the department continuously conducts joint seminars and conferences with civil society organizations.
