Social Work
Department Overview – Social Work Department
The Social Work Department was established during the academic year 2008–2009 in response to the growing need for qualified social workers in the Kurdistan Region. The first cohort of undergraduate students was admitted in 2009. The establishment of the department was strongly supported by UN agencies, particularly UNICEF, as well as non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working in the region.
With funding from UNICEF, the department benefited from a two-year academic cooperation with Ersta Sköndal Bräcke University College in Sweden. During this period, experienced faculty members from the Swedish university contributed to curriculum development and teaching within the department. The initiative also received crucial backing from the Kurdistan Region Prime Minister's Office at the time.
The department offers a four-year Bachelor of Social Work program taught entirely in English. Since its inception, over 700 students have graduated, many of whom now work in international and local NGOs, schools, counseling centers, and therapy services.
Currently, the department has 16 faculty members holding master's and doctoral degrees from universities in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, China, Kurdistan University, and Salahaddin University.
As an academic unit, the department operates under the umbrella of the College of Arts at Salahaddin University – Erbil, and it remains committed to preparing future professionals equipped to address social challenges and promote well-being in the region.
